If you're looking for something more colloquial or modern, or with zing, zip, and umph it the narrator's interpretation, this will not be the version for you. It reads somewhat like the 1984 NIV, the older Revised Standard Version, and the New King James Version beautifully combined into one. The ESV itself is an extremely accurate, poetic version that I'm only now discovering, but that I'm overjoyed to recommend. The lack of music or added vocal interpretation enhances this version-JUST the Word, without any added interpretation. Job's laments are heart-felt, but not so raw that they carry you over the precipis with him. God's grief at His people's unfaithfulness as set forth in Jeremiah, for example, is read with mercy that will lead you to repentance if you have, like me, ever struggled in your spiritual walk. Even passages in which the Lord speaks to His children emphatically are read with a soft, gentle tone-not compromising by any means, but tender and loving. This is, without doubt, the most soothing narration of the Word I have ever encountered-so much so that I could easily see it being played to young children before bed, for patients in some hospital settings, and in other quiet environments. This has dramatically hindered my ability to worship-until I discovered Kristyn Getty's reading of the ESV. I love to read God's Word, and especially need His presence during this time, but actually reading has proved too difficult due to brain fog, and I have found nearly all audio versions too overly-stimulating due to ear discomfort and heart palpitations.
